Can water get into a car engine through the exhaust pipe?
Yes., but not unless you intentionally try to do so.
Since, The exhaust pipe is directly connected the engine. There are many ways, this could happen.
1. Connecting the former to a pump and feeding the water into it could cause engine to be filled with water.
2. This could also happen if you keep your Rear portion of your car more elevated then the front, since water will be flown towards the engine
Normally, this won't happen since the exhaust manifold of the engine is placed very much higher than the plane along silencer.
Water can get to your engine through exhaust pipes, but that is the least of your concern, since enough pressure would be required (i.e level high enough) for it to push in. By then, water would have already entered the car cabin.
What causes damage is, if water gets in through the air intake of the engine. It will pull in water, which can cause the engine to seize( i.e. Hydrolock)
